Manchester United 2-2 Tottenham Hotspur

Premier League
Monday, 15 January 2024

In a thrilling encounter at Old Trafford, Tottenham twice fought back to secure a 2-2 draw against Manchester United. Rodrigo Bentancur's equalizer, assisted by debutant Timo Werner, showcased Spurs' resilience. Despite missing a chance to break into the Premier League's top four, they now share fourth place with Arsenal. United's Rashford and Hojlund found the net, but Scott McTominay missed a late opportunity to clinch victory. The result places Manchester United in seventh, eight points behind Arsenal, while Tottenham sits fifth on goal difference. Both teams gear up for FA Cup action in their upcoming fixtures.

The Lilywhites dominated much of the game but conceded early as Rasmus Hojlund scored a quick goal for Erik ten Hag’s side. Richarlison equalized for Tottenham with a clever header from Pedro Porro’s corner. Rashford restored the lead for The Red Devils just before halftime. Bentancur quickly leveled the score after the break, capitalizing on a pass from debutant Timo Werner.

Despite Tottenham's attacking efforts, they couldn't find a breakthrough. Man United secured the win, with Scott McTominay's late header being their closest chance. The result places Man United in seventh, while Tottenham misses a top-four opportunity, sitting fifth behind Arsenal on goal difference.

With the honors even and both teams securing a point, only one advances in the table. United climbs two spots to seventh, surpassing Brighton and Chelsea. However, this result does little to improve Ten Hag's team's poor goal difference, standing at minus five.

Meanwhile, Spurs maintain their fifth position, tied on points with Arsenal in fourth. Postecoglou's squad, having played one more game, trails behind with an inferior goal difference compared to their North London rivals.

Although a draw seems fair, both teams depart with frustration, recognizing missed opportunities that could have yielded more. Both teams are set for FA Cup action – Tottenham against Manchester City on January 26, and Manchester United facing Newport County or Eastleigh two days later.

Player of The Match
